Discover how The Design Studio goes above and beyond to create stunning floating decor and hanging arrangements for every wedding style. Today, we’re sitting down with Aime Dunstan of The Design Studio to talk all things design.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration for designing an event from floor to ceiling?

A: A work of art, fashion show, film or pop culture phenomenon – any sensory experience can inspire a fresh experience. As a designer, I work to be present in every moment. I use the word ‘work’ because it is easy to become distracted or preoccupied, and it takes intentional practice to maintain this awareness. When reading, browsing social media, dining out, shopping, or traveling, I always pay special notice to architecture, interior and landscape design, fashion trends, and merchandising. I stay hungry, always looking for a fresh idea or a new twist on a classic.

Q:  How do hanging arrangements differ from regular arrangements?

A: Aside from conceptualizing and engineering, the most important factor is scale. The installation or display must be large enough not only to fill the space, but to make a statement. If the design element being featured is small or delicate in nature, then we consider using it en masse. After all, why hang one disco ball when you could hang 45 in varying sizes at varying heights?

Q: What’s your favorite hanging piece to design?

A: The most exciting projects are the ones we have no idea how to pull off at first. Collaborating on mechanical and logistical solutions involves a lot of sketching, digital renderings, safety protocols and, naturally, a lot of arm waving and random body movements to accompany our explanations. It’s super fun!

Q: What’s one hanging element every couple should consider for their big day?

A: Anything you love, displayed en masse. Whether it be a dozen crystal chandeliers over the dance floor, 45 vintage Parisian-style parasols or 18 larger-than-life silk butterflies.

Q: What design trends do you think will be big for 2019 weddings?

A: Today’s bride and groom are looking for unique photo backdrops, such as walls of tropical greenery or a custom neon hashtag sign to snap pictures with. Residential style place settings are a must. Other trends include patterned china, colored water goblets or glittering gold flatware to enhance the table design and spark a conversation. Custom dance floors are at the top of the list, serving as a focal point and setting the tone for a fantastic evening ahead. In general, selections are more bold. Copper is the new rose gold. Black is the new white. Colored candles have replaced classic ivory.
