Each year on April 2, Autism Speaks celebrates ‘Light It Up Blue‘ in recognition of the United Nations’ sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day and a kick-off to Autism Awareness Month.

In support of this global initiative, The Breakers will light the historic Florentine Fountain blue this evening with hopes to shine a light on autism.

The Breakers Goes Blue: World Autism Awareness Day

{The Breakers Florentine Fountain lit blue for World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, 2014.}

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with autism in the United States. World Autism Awareness Day, celebrated on April 2 annually, was adopted by the United Nations in 2007 to shine a bright light on autism as a growing global health crisis.

World Autism Awareness Day activities increase and develop world knowledge of the autism crisis (learn more here) and impart information regarding the importance of early diagnosis and early intervention. Autism is one of only three health issues to be recognized by the United Nations with its own day.
