Debating the best wine to serve with your Thanksgiving feast? Our team was curious as well. So, we asked The Breakers’ Master Sommelier Virginia Philip for some help…

Thanksgiving Wine Pairing

Here are Virginia’s top three recommendations for wine to pair with your Thanksgiving dinner meal…

White: Gewurztraminer from California or Alsace, France

Thanksgiving Wine Pairing
This medium bodied spicy white wine is a perfect match for Thanksgiving turkey or ham and all the accompaniments. The melon, honey and apple overtones in the wine work well with sweet potatoes or yams, stuffing, mashed potatoes and green bean casserole.

Suggested producers: Gary Farrell, Pierre Sparr, Trimbach or Zind Humbrecht

Red: Cru Beaujolais or Beaujolais-Villages from Burgundy, France

Thanksgiving Wine Pairing
This light bodied red wine works is a perfect fit for lighter fare such as turkey. Jammy Jolly Rancher flavors of red strawberry, cherry and raspberry compliment the hint of earth in the wine.

Cru Beaujolais is a bit more expensive, but can easily taste like red burgundy. Beaujolais-Villages is a bit lighter and a little easier on the pocketbook.

White: Riesling from Germany, Kabinett style

Riesling from Germany, Kabinett style

This light bodies wine has notes of pear, peach and apple with jasmine and mineral. Pleasant to drink on its own, German Rieslings are even better with food.

Countdown to Thanksgiving: Three days! Happy cooking…

Exciting news: Our Joan Bever, director of food and beverage for catering and banquet operations at The Breakers, was recently featured on Oh My Goodness Gracious, offering some of her tips and tricks for entertaining…

Entertaining Tips

Oh My Goodness Gracious asked Joan a few questions. Here’s sneak peek at what she shared…

What advice do you have for the budding host or hostess?
Joan Bever: There are really no rules when it comes to selecting a menu. We like to tell our clients to think of the dinner menu as if you were having friends over your home – you can’t make everyone happy with your menu, but with at least three sensational courses you know everyone will find something they like and enjoy a wonderful evening.

Another “must do” for special events is to incorporate an element of surprise. Ensure a “wow factor” with an interactive element – like a pizza station or a candy bar – or, add fun to your event with fireworks, sparklers or unique party favors.

Is there a Breakers staff motto / tip from your culture of excellence you’d be willing to share?
Joan Bever: The Breakers stands alone with unmatched quality and versatility in cuisine, presentation and service. Our working environment is characterized by teamwork and dedication, while consistently providing a high level of personalized, sincere and engaging service to all guests at all times.

As our president, Paul Leone says, “We believe that to achieve our goals, the most important element of our strategy is to attract, retain, and develop the best and brightest talent in the hospitality industry.” That extraordinary emphasis on our team clearly benefits our clients.

Visit Oh My Goodness Gracious to read all Joan’s surprisingly entertaining tips

Special thanks to Allison of Oh My Goodness Gracious for the lovely feature!
