Photographer Terry Gruber says he was practically born with a camera hanging around his neck. But photographing weddings — he says he didn’t find weddings, they found  him.

“I was shooting fashion, photographing a catbook, and working on features when my friends one by one got married,” says Terry.  “I practiced ‘guest wedding photography’ at each nuptial and made ironic captioned scrapbooks as wedding gifts. One of these albums made it into the hands of a wedding planner, and the rest is history.

Q: Where does your inspiration come from?
A: In response to the physical world, three of my senses trigger ideas:  Sight, smell and sound. Observation, intuition, premonition, books, movies, and museums also inspire me.

Enjoy a few of Terry’s favorite images for events at The Breakers…

Q: What is it like photographing event at The Breakers? How do you use this to inspire you and your events at the hotel?
A: Photographing at The Breakers is like taking a time machine to the Roaring 20’s.  The architecture is lush, the details are opulent and the craftsmanship and sheer scale of the venue is decadent. The first time I photographed at The Breakers I thought that something was wrong with my camera because I found I needed a much wider lens to include the environment. That had never happened in New York City.

Q: What’s in: What hot new wedding trends do you see emerging?
A: Trends are trendy. These are a few that Gruber has been an industry leader in promoting and I think are here to stay.

  • From the groom to the bride – Secret proposal photography
  • From the bride to the groom – Boudoir photography
  • For the couple – Engaging engagement photography sessions
  • From mom – Bridal shower photography

Terry Gruber

Q: What’s out: What wedding trend could you leave behind?
A: The garter removal has vanished.  I see fewer and fewer bouquet tosses, and groom’s cakes are a rarity. Photography  wise, most of the post production by numbers effects that are so trendy today to the detriment of pure photography.

Terry Gruber

Q: If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing?
A: After earning an MFA from Columbia Film School and making my thesis film with Martin Scorsese as my advisor, I would be on that road not taken.

Terry Gruber

Q: What advice would you give to a bride who wants a traditional wedding with a modern twist?
A: I would advise them to reverse it and do a modern wedding with a traditional twist!

Terry Gruber

Q: Give us three of your favorite wedding must-dos.
A: 1) No matter what is going on, take The Breakers bride and groom onto the beach at sunset.
2) Take the time to take a large group shot of everyone at the wedding.
3) Always find an ending shot to the story. There is nothing more satisfying in an album than a happy ending.

 Terry Gruber

Q: What’s the most important piece of advice you can offer a bride and groom?
A: Be authentic and true to yourself in every choice you make about your wedding.  Most importantly, look into each other’s eyes as often as possible so that your memories center on each other and trust me to tell that story in the context of the bigger picture of everyone else that swirled around you.

Terry Gruber

Q: How does a wedding at The Breakers differ from those at other venues?
A: In two words: space and choices.  You can have a three day event at The Breakers and never entertain in the same space. You have the option of several outdoor areas for your ceremony and backup for a rain scenario.  You can have cocktails in the courtyard and move inside for the reception.  You can get married on the beach, party around the pool or have the Ocean Terrace for an intimate rehearsal dinner.  Borrow a golf cart and in 45 minutes you can shoot the bride and groom against so many colorful and interesting backgrounds.  The Breakers is the “Uber” venue!

The best part of the planning process so far? Nicole says it’s having her groom by her side every step pf the way! “Jeff was just so enthusiastic about wanting to have our wedding at The Breakers, and it is the sweetest thing because I feel like many grooms aren’t always that excited about all the wedding planning,” Nicole says. “Jeff definitely is and I think it is solely due to the fact that he is beyond thrilled about our venue!”
